Relationship Between Psychological and Physical Health, and its Effect on Adolescents
Envision all the stress and pressures one faces on a day-to-day basis. Stress builds up until one’s physical or mental condition begins to deteriorate. This is especially true for teenagers and young adults. With school, activities, work, changing bodies, and complex social situations, the adolescent years are a very turbulent time. With these and many other added pressures, many young people face problems with both their mental and physical health. However, there is a deeper connection between mental and physical health. Although we often think of the mind and body as separate things, they are both vastly interconnected. Psychological and physical health are very deeply intertwined. Being in a poor psychological state can actually increase the risk for chronic illnesses and diseases. Likewise, if one's body is in poor physical condition, this can have negative impacts on their mental health in many ways. By participating in methods of bettering both physical and mental health, this connection can be used to achieve a healthier body and mind. Especially in the case of adolescents, who deal with extreme stress and pressure, it is crucial to consider this psycho-physical relationship when making the choices to improve and maintain one's overall health.
